Gauge charts

The following sheet metal gauge size reference chart gives the weight and thickness of sheet metal given as a "gauge" sometimes spelled gage and indicates the standard thickness of sheet metal and wire.

For most materials, as the gauge number increases, the material thickness decreases. The gage sizes are specified by numbers and the following tables also gives the decimal equivalents of the different gage numbers. There is some disagreement with regards to the use of gage numbers when purchasing gage size where it is preferable to give the exact dimensions in decimal fractions of an inch while referencing the gauge size and material.

While the dimensions thus specified should conform to the gage ordinarily used for a given class of material, any error in the specification due, for example, to the use of a table having "rounded off"? This author recommends specifications for both gage and decimal thickness when ordering sheet metal gage stock.

The decimal system of indicating gage sizes has been being used quite generally, and depending on industry or organization, gage numbers may or may not be specified. Unfortunately, there is considerable variation in the use of different gages.

Metal Gauge Chart

For example, a gage ordinarily used for copper, brass and other non-ferrous materials, may incorrectly be used for steel, and vice versa. The gages specified in the following table are the ones ordinarily employed for the materials mentioned, but there are some minor exceptions and variations in the different industries.

To help, this blog will explain the gauge system and features a sheet metal gauge chart. Gauges are used to specify the thickness of a sheet metal. Gauges are neither standard nor metric and the values are independent of those measurement systems. A gauge conversion chart can be used to determine the actual thickness of sheet metal in inches or millimeters. For example, 18 gauge steel, according to a gauge conversion chart, is 0.

Excel Gauge Chart

There are several different gauge systems used today, with specific gauge designations used for specific metal types. For example, in one gauge system, 18 gauge steel measures 0. Because of the varying thicknesses, a gauge chart should be used to ensure the metal meets the required dimensions. The gauge system has long history in metal fabrication. It most likely originated from the British wire industry before the standard and metric measurement systems were widely adopted.

At that time, gauges were used to describe the diameter of the metal wire being drawn. Since then, it has remained a prevalent method of designating the thickness of both wire and sheet metal.

A radial gauge chart has a circular arc and shows a single value that measures progress toward a goal or a Key Performance Indicator KPI. The line or needle represents the goal or target value.

The shading represents the progress toward that goal. The The value inside the arc represents the progress value. Power BI spreads all possible values evenly along the arc, from the minimum left-most value to the maximum right-most value. In this example, you're a car retailer tracking the sales team's average sales per month.

The needle represents a cars sales goal. The minimum possible average sales is 0 and the maximum is The blue shading shows that the team is averaging approximately sales this month. Luckily, there's still another week to reach the goal. This tutorial uses the Financial sample Excel file.

I once had a tutorial that showed how to create a dial type chart, complete with colored regions, one or more needle indicators, and a numerical scale around its periphery.

But the page received inordinate attention, and I realized the technique was prone to misuse and abuse, so I took it down. I did recently post an example of a dial gauge, but only in jest: Dial Gauge. Jon, completely agree with you, dial charts are prone for misuse. I wanted to see how readers would take this. Despite being a poor presentation alternative, dials have been a well known metaphor in real life and people can relate to them when used in moderation.

I am hoping readers realize that this is one of the million ways to sell their story and use it only when needed. I posted my own dial gauge to show that it could be done and to show how clever I was to do so.

I've actually taken down a few pages that present ineffective visualization techniques, and there are a few articles I've written for other outlets besides my own that I wish I could take back.Gauge charts came into usage to visualize the performance as against a set goal. The Gauge charts are based on the concept of speedometer of the automobiles. These have become the most preferred charts by the executives, to know at a glance whether values are falling within an acceptable value green or the outside acceptable value red.

Gauge charts, also referred to as Dial charts or Speedometer charts, use a pointer or a needle to show information as a reading on a dial. A Gauge Chart shows the minimum, the maximum and the current value depicting how far from the maximum you are.

Alternatively, you can have two or three ranges between the minimum and maximum values and visualize in which range the current value is falling. Gauge charts can be used to display a value relative to one to three data ranges. Though the Gauge charts are still the preferred ones by most of the executives, there are certain drawbacks with them.

Often mislead by omitting key information, which is possible in the current Big Data visualization needs. They waste space in case multiple charts are to be used.

The value in the cell C9 is the Pointer size. You can take it as 5 for brevity in formatting and later change to 1, to make it a thin pointer. You can create the Gauge chart with a Doughnut chart showing different regions corresponding to different Values and a Pie chart denoting the pointer.

As you can observe, the Gauge chart is complete in terms of values. The next step is to have a pointer or needle to show the status. Select the cells containing data for Value, Pointer and End, i.
